Having four kids means that birthdays occur with a startling frequency.
We have our routines now which have become tradition: embarrassing collages of photos on social media; banners on the windows and raucous, nay, operatic versions of Happy Birthday in a darkened room around large, unhealthily sweet cakes bedecked with candles.
Today is the eldest’s turn. She is a fine 17 and as a surprise we have acquired her Provisional Driving Licence and arranged for an instructor to turn up at 2 this afternoon.
It’s been a joy to watch her develop from a quiet youngster into a force to be reckoned with, not frightened to use her voice to make her views known. Her timidity was holding her back but as she’s started college (16-18) her tutors have encouraged her, with us, to work on this part of her character.
It’s simple things like saying “I’m going to ….” instead of “Dad, can I…?” which show us that she is beginning to reveal a stronger, more organised, mature daughter of whom we are very proud.
She doesn’t read this but Happy Birthday Hev. xx

On a different note my Dechox through March for the British Heart Foundation is complete. It was hard but I made it without cheating.
As a chocoholic it was really a stretch for me to do this and the oddest thing has happened.
My cravings stopped after a few weeks and this morning I ate a choc from the fridge and was very disappointed. A bit oily, a little bitter while also sickeningly sweet and with an after taste which won’t go away.
You can still donate on my JustGiving Page if you like.
