Like many I pride myself in being blessed with a modicum of intelligence.

However, lately I struggle to understand some of the things I see and hear in the media and around me.

The problems off the pitch at the Euro football tournament are truly disturbing. To travel simply to fight is a nonsense. Warmongers try to justify it, arguing religion, lines of territory or opposing politics.

But this is just football, people. Personally, I don’t see the point in the game, other than as a fairly random focus for betting. I do appreciate folk like it though and as a family event, I’m sure it provides a wonderful afternoon out.

I hear some politicians actually support this thuggery…..

The debate about wether or not we, the UK, should be in or out of the European Union is topical too. Points “for and agin” are thrown around, made up and distorted so that now we are ready to vote, neither side can be sure what the truth really is.

My gut is telling me the vote will decide that we stay in, but I could be wrong. (the bookies favour Remain).

Other topics befuddle me.

Why has a council allowed a mother to exist in a situation which has forced them to remove 17 children from her over 30 years? Story Here. Sometimes it is proper that a child be removed from an unsafe home or parent but to allow this statistic to occur is just plain irresponsible.

I’m a blood donor and watch as they take several test phials before they take my pint donation. These are screened for a gamut of conditions. This link lists them. Why then do they ban men who take part in homosexual acts from giving blood, at present for a year but it used to be for a lifetime. I never have, nor ever will do these things but the logic used evades me. Fortunately changes are afoot.

Still, maybe it’s a good thing that some things can’t be understood, or rather that I accept that despite folk churning on about it, I won’t ever fully grasp the reasons why.

Confucius said that real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance and Socrates said that true knowledge is to know that you know nothing.

Wise words.
